Artist Statement
Zillah’s figurative ceramic sculptures embody transformation, renewal, and resilience; expressions of the human condition from a feminine perspective. Rooted in lived experience, her work explores themes of healing, aging, and loss while celebrating the vitality and endurance of the spirit. Through delicate yet powerful forms, she creates figures that transcend suffering and embrace newfound strength.
Working with paper porcelain clay, Zillah first sculpts paper models to explore movement, layering a fine clay skin that reveals the story of their making. Hands, feet, and heads are sculpted separately, their precise placement breathing life into each figure. Inspired by devotional art and spiritual traditions, her work reflects the journey from vulnerability to liberation, offering moments of connection and recognition. The Vitality Women series, in particular, represents freedom; floating, unburdened, embodying hope. She seeks to evoke awe and wonder, celebrating the beauty of resilience and the transformative power of healing.
